EVOLUTION OF A VOICE

A DEDICATION TO ELLI MILAN AT MILAN ART INSTITUTE

“I did not arrive with a voice. It was carved from guidance, practice and patience. Like the canyon walls I paint etched by storms and floods that reveal my breath from inside the rock; and the brushstroke I release onto the canvas that forms the gentle nape of a woman’s neck, or the colors I lay down that emanate the energy I infer. My voice was awakened; not in thunder, but in fragments - a tiny brushstroke, the swipe of a big brush, a breath, a sigh, an expletive! Each piece of art I create is a revelation. My understanding of beauty. It is not a path toward perfection, but truth. The truth that lived in my body long before my brush ever touched the canvas. My voice is not fixed, it is a wild thing - ever growing, shedding, burning, blooming, exploding! Sometimes it trembles. Sometimes it roars. But always, it speaks. This is the work: to listen, to lose my way, and to begin again. To trust that every mark is a step, every brushstroke a seed, every shape - new insight. I am forever growing. This is the evolution of my voice - this is what I have to say. Thank you Elli Milan for putting yourself out into the ether for souls like mine to find.”
